Host an Event

Does your community Know Pneumonia?

It surprises most people to learn that pneumonia kills more children than any other disease. That is why leading global health organizations have called for World Pneumonia Day- to call attention to the over 1.5 million children that die each year from pneumonia and ask people to join the fight to save these lives.

This is where you step in! You can Host a World Pneumonia Day Event in your community on or around November 12th to help raise awareness about this disease and the proven solutions available to reduce child pneumonia deaths.

Your event can be big or small- you can invite family, friends, co-workers or neighbors. You can draw from any of the ideas and themes below to make your event successful or you can come up with your own original event ideas that fit you and your community!

Five Easy Steps to Host Your WPD Event

  • Pick a theme – Choose a fun or interesting hook to get folks to your event.
  • Send out invitations- Invite your community to a historic event to celebrate the first ever World Pneumonia Day. Make sure to include the date, time, location and any other relevant information.
  • Plan the event- Secure a location for the event and determine any resources you may need to provide. Gather plenty of information about pneumonia and the many ways people can get involved in the WPD movement. Utilize visuals and multimedia from the WPD website. Hang posters in popular places for community events.
  • Hold the Event- Make sure your event starts and ends on time, keep it interesting and be sure to get contact information from your guests for follow-up.
  • Follow Up- Provide personalized thank you notes, emails or phone calls to your guests to thank them for participating in your event and to see if they need more information or want to get more involved.

Event Ideas and Themes

  • Host a Blue Party with blue foods, drinks, and decorations or ask your guests to wear blue- the official WPD color or possibly host a fund raiser by making and selling blue items such as blue knitted items or other blue crafts.
  • Plan a “Get to Know Pneumonia” event at your school, library, place of worship or community center – offer to teach others about pneumonia and get folks to sign the pledge, become advocates and donate towards pneumonia protection, prevention and treatment.
  • Host a Letter Writing Dinner Party. Letters to the editor and Op-eds are one of the most effective ways to help spread the word about pneumonia to the people who make policy change. It can be fun to write these letters in a group setting.
  • Plan a Local Walk, Run, or Other Sporting Event to raise awareness about pneumonia and funds for coalition members who implement life-saving solutions on the ground around the world every day.
